Driving while intoxicated is still the chief reason for fatal traffic collisions in California. In 2010, 52 percent of all California traffic fatalities involved alcohol or drugs. Figures also show that offenders with multiple DWI convictions are the most likely to re-offend. License suspension is one of the tools California uses to deter DUI recidivism. Nevertheless, about 75 percent of drivers with suspended or revoked licenses continue to drive and pose a threat to others.
